Say less, darling. The room leans in.Wealth whispers. Money shouts.Walk in as though you were expected.Never ask for the discount. Ask for the terms.Class is how you treat people who can do nothing for you.Always leave while they still want you to stay.Announce the result. The move is none of their business.Lateness is theft wearing perfume.Hold open the door you once waited outside.Thank-you notes. By hand. Always.Whoever raises their voice first has already lost the room.Patience compounds. So does panic.

A letter before we begin

My dears, this is not a wish list.

Forty years ago I had no money of my own, no voice in my own home, and a man who made very sure I knew it. What I did have, the spring my grandmother died, was her diary: a lifetime of watching the women she sewed for, written down in a small, slanted hand. How to enter a room. When to stay silent. Whom never to chase.

I lived by those pages, one at a time. I left. I rebuilt from nothing, with no shouting and no shortcuts, and doors opened that I hadn't known were there.

Status isn't money, darling. It's habits, and habits can be learned. So I wrote them down again, for you.

From the other side

No borrowed applause. Yours will be among the first.

This house is new, and I won't dress it up with praise nobody gave. When readers review the books, their words appear here as written: stars, sentences and all. Until then, judge me by the notes below. They're free, and there's a new one every morning.

The diary

Where the rules come from

It began with one small book.

My grandmother was a dressmaker. For forty years she knelt at the hems of women who owned the rooms, and she watched: how they waited, how they refused, how they thanked the people nobody else noticed. At night she wrote it down.

None of it needed money. All of it needed practice. Those rules never cared whether you were a man or a woman, only whether you kept them.

Start tonight. I'll see you on the other side.

Ninety nights from now you'll be ninety nights older either way. The only question is whether you'll have the pages to show for it.
